Why Choose Hydrangeas from Palgisalu Puukool?

Beautiful gardens don’t happen by accident. They require hardy, well-acclimatized plants. At Palgisalu Puukool, we source and grow our hydrangeas specifically to thrive in our demanding northern climate. You get robust root systems and plants ready to bloom from day one. No empty promises, just fair prices, healthy plants, and honest, expert advice from growers who actually love what they do.

Hot Red & Doppio Eccelent

If your garden lacks drama, start here. Hot Red and Doppio Eccelent deliver an intense, deep red punch that instantly breaks up monotonous green spaces. They bloom long into the autumn and forgive beginner mistakes easily. Perfect as standalone statement pieces or to create high-contrast borders.

Diamond Rouge & Diamontino

These two bring pure elegance to your garden. Diamond Rouge transitions into breathtaking deep red tones as the season progresses. Diamontino, on the other hand, offers soft, romantic pink hues. Both varieties are structurally strong, weather-resistant, and work beautifully as low, decorative hedges.

Silver Dollar & Hercules

Size matters in landscaping. Silver Dollar produces massive, lush flower heads reaching up to 30 cm in diameter. To support that weight, you need strong stems—and that is exactly where Hercules shines. Its sturdy stalks keep the heavy blooms upright even during heavy rain and summer storms. Ideal for larger properties and public parks.

Annabelle & Magical Firefox

For gardeners seeking something out of the ordinary. Annabelle is a classic powerhouse, covered in massive white globes all summer long. Magical Firefox is a shapeshifter—its unique color transformation changes with the seasons, keeping your garden dynamic and surprising.

How to Pruning Your Hydrangeas for Maximum Blooms?

Pruning hydrangeas can feel like guesswork. Cut at the wrong time, and you risk accidentally removing next year’s flower buds. The secret to massive blooms isn’t a special fertilizer—it is knowing which type of hydrangea you have in your garden.

We divide our collection into two simple groups to make your life easier.

Group 1: The Smooth Hydrangeas (Like Annabelle)

These varieties bloom on new wood (the growth that happens in the current spring).

  • When to prune: Early spring, just as the winter frost breaks.

  • How to do it: Cut the entire plant down hard, leaving about 15–30 cm of stem above the ground. This aggressive cut forces the plant to send up brand-new, vigorous shoots that will carry huge, fresh flower globes by July.

Group 2: The Panicle Hydrangeas (Like Silver Dollar, Hercules, Limelight)

These also bloom on new wood, but they need a framework of older, strong stems to support their massive weight. If you cut them to the ground, the new stems will be too weak and will flop over during summer rainstorms.

  • When to prune: Late winter or early spring before green leaves appear.

  • How to do it: Think of it as shaping a small tree. Remove any weak, spindly, or crossing branches completely. Then, cut the remaining strong stems back by about one-third, cutting just above a healthy bud. This builds a sturdy skeleton that easily holds up 30 cm flower heads.

Pro Tip from Palgisalu: Always use sharp, clean bypass pruners. Ragged cuts invite disease, while clean cuts heal fast and redirect the plant’s energy straight into blooming.
