Group 1: The Smooth Hydrangeas (Like Annabelle)
These varieties bloom on new wood (the growth that happens in the current spring).

When to prune: Early spring, just as the winter frost breaks.

How to do it: Cut the entire plant down hard, leaving about 15–30 cm of stem above the ground. This aggressive cut forces the plant to send up brand-new, vigorous shoots that will carry huge, fresh flower globes by July.
